The Best Curriculum Isn’t a Subject. It’s a Fit.
In Facebook groups, the questions always sound the same. What’s the best math curriculum? What’s the best language arts curriculum? But that’s the wrong question. The real question is what’s the best curriculum for you and your family.
There are three things to know before you choose.
Know Yourself
You’re the one implementing the schedule, keeping things moving, prodding everyone along. So before you pick a curriculum, think about your capacity. Not on a good day in September. On the second Tuesday in February, when the energy is gone and you just want to quit.
If this is your first year homeschooling, expect that February slump. It happens.
Instead of reaching for the stars and failing over and over, aim for the floor. What’s the minimum viable day you can maintain no matter what? A bad night’s sleep, a hormonal week, a grumpy kid. That floor is what you’ll actually be able to march through day in and day out, and it’s what gets you to your goals. This isn’t a value judgment. If you know you tend to go hard and then crash, plan for the crash. Choose curriculum that survives it.
Know Your Real Life
Curriculum has to fit the life you actually live, not the one you see on Instagram.
When curriculum choosing for middle school, the family lived on an acreage with chicken chores, cats, and gardens, and everything in town was an hour away. That meant a lot of time in the vehicle, so curriculum got chosen to match that reality: things that worked from the van.
It’s easy to watch a homeschool family online calmly working through their day and wonder how they make it look so simple. Some of that comes down to knowing what they want their homeschool to feel like and building toward it. But the starting point is always your own actual life. Choose curriculum that fits it, and that’s how you get the atmosphere you’re after.
Know Your Kid
This is where an honest, objective look matters most.
It’s easy to catastrophize. A concept isn’t clicking and suddenly it feels like nothing is working. But sitting down and actually assessing where things stand, just the facts, tends to land somewhere different. Sometimes it’s better than it seemed. Sometimes it confirms a concept really does need another approach. Either way, it’s just a snapshot of where your kid is right now, and that snapshot is what lets you pick curriculum that actually fits them.
